How Volunteering could be different



Cafes could be for grief / discussions of death

Bus riders could have benches

Snowmen signs could be made for neighbors

Hugs could be given on the internet

A Council of Dads / Moms could step in after a terminal illness

Volunteers could visit / clean graves of fallen soldiers

Athletes could serve as mentors / motivational speakers

Cities / nonprofits / apps could offer befriending services

Ponds could be good for the environment

Foster care kids could have nightlights / care packages / suitcases

Shelter animals could be taken out for field trips

Cord blood, tissue, and/or the placenta could be banked to treat diseases

Hot tubs / pools in backyards could be open to all

High schools could have exercise / wellness / support / service groups afterschool

No one could die alone

Art shows could raise money for charity

Low-income people could receive legal help with trained legal navigators

Haircuts / vet services could aid the homeless

Community chess games could be organized by volunteers

Cancer or sick patients could have free house cleaning services

A national monthly holiday could encourage community improvement projects and volunteering

Trees could be watered by citizens

A friendly caller / visitor program could help with loneliness

Underprivileged kids could get swim lessons

Jogging / walking could be combined with picking up litter

Social prescribing / helping others could be used for depression and mental health

Community mediation boards could resolve disputes and conflict

Communities could have big lunches

Corporations could have service corps

Transgender youth, kids in need, and sick/alone adults could receive holiday gifts

BBQ / good food could be served after natural disasters / for refugees and war victims

At-risk youth could repair custom cars, work with horses, learn cooking / boxing / wrestling, and/or develop art / music

Released prisoners could go to homestays

Beaches could have cleanup TLC stations

Beached orcas, whales, and dolphins could be rescued

Sea urchins could be removed to restore kelp forests

Citizens could be detectives

Pets could be flown to animal shelters lacking pets

Greetings cards could be made for the sick, elderly, or military

Gardens, lawns, and farms could be bee / insect friendly

Insect hotels could help with pollination

Milkweed could be planted to aid monarch butterfly migration

Grandparents could be adopted

Mutual aid networks could offer help to communities

Meat could be eaten less

Blind people could be assisted virtually

Foster children could have Court Appointed Special Advocates

Citizens could check their environment and drinking water

Volunteer events could help clean up litter

Human milk banks could help save infants' lives

Young people could do community service, activism, and volunteering

Volunteers could rescue people in natural disasters
